Popularly known as the 'Japanese gem' and rated as one of the 'Top Five New Restaurants in Texas', Uchi is a very romantic restaurant with dim-lit lanterns. If you want some privacy, then the Sushi Bar is for you. In appetizers, try the Muscovy Duck and the Baby Bok Choy and Shiitake Mushrooms. Make sure you leave some place for desserts; the Chai Tea Creme Brulee is awesome. Reservation is a must. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.
Great food, good service, and a nice ambiance shouldn't cost you over $300 for you and your date unless you leave miserably full and buzzed if not drunk. While I enjoy nice meals and drinks, I don't like leaving a restaurant with my pants around my ankles and a sore bum. It would be a different story if the views were overlooking the ocean or harbor...not S. Lamar. If you're trying to impress a date, take her to any other great restaurant in Austin, and then throw a Benjamin in the offering plate come Sunday morning.
The food here is absolutely fantastic. When people think of great Japanese food, they probably don't think of Texas unless they live in Austin and have been to Uchi.
The the first couple of times we went, we had sushi, sashimi and other dishes and they were amazingly fresh and good.
