Wow, you either love this place or hate it I suppose. My husband and I went last night for $1 oysters. We had no reservations, told about a 45 min wait. Waited about 15 mins and 2 spots were offered to us at the bar. Bartender was reasonably nice. The people next to us enjoyed their martinis and cocktails. (We don't drink.) The highlight of the visit was the SCALLOPS! They were absolutely delightful, perfectly prepared, light golden brown on the top, fresh, tender meat, delicious...probably the best scallops I have ever had. Tried the sauce sampler for $2.50. Enjoyed almost every sauce, it was worth it to try them. The mashed potatoes were heaven especially with all the sauces. It's a nice restaurant and I disagree about the decor being bad. The place was nicer than I thought it would be...or I would have dressed up a little.
We made reservations for 6:30 and with the traffic in Portsmouth and the lack of easy to find parking we were 17 minutes late. First told that after 30 minutes the table was given to another party and then told there were 2 seats at the bar, our party was five people. Also told the next available seating was at 9:15, even though no one was waiting. When I looked at the actual time we said wait a minute it is now only 6:47 were were promptly told it was 6:55 by her watch, my time is on my cell phone so it is pretty good. Then we were told all of the things we could have done but nothing about what they could do. We went to another place and they were also busy but quick to find us a spot in the line so we were willing to wait a bit. So, don't be late or really just go someplace else, plenty of choices in Portsmouth with better views, menus and most likley better service.
Not worth the trip, extremely overpriced. We went for dinner Sunday July 3rd, The oysters were small & they still had sand in them. We ordered the kinguine with clams & we got over cooked pasta with chopped clams that had an over powering lemon sauce. There were only 4 whole clams in a $21 dish!!!!
The server was nice, but this resturant can't even make pasta, nevermind seafood! Don't go!
I have never been treated so rudely by a hastess before in all the years of dining out. We ended up being late for our reservation, by 17 minutes and she said could only hold it for 30 minutes,,,I told her 30 minutes haven't even gone by yet, but I understood even though there was not one other party waiting, she was very thick with atitude and told us there not another table until 9:15, our initial reservation was 6:30 pm. The total lack of professionalism turned me right off. We went down the street and had a very nice dinner, and on our way back we passed the resaurant at 8:30 and there were many tables empty.....
I am a little suprised by the negative reviews, my husband and I had an amazing meal and the service was outstanding. The mussels are out of this world. I had the escolar which was buttery and rich with flavor. The hostess made sure we were seated on time, and our server was attentive and answered all our questions graciously. The restaurant was very busy and full of energy. We will definitely be back!!
