This place is phenomenal!!! We loved it so much that we stopped here twice during our stay. The Lobster Bisque was excellent, it was the best bisque we had during our trip. There was something on the menu for everyone. Burgers, steak and cheese. The Blackened Mahi Mahi with chipotle aoli was exceptional, as was the fried catfish sandwich. Even the chicken gyro was authentic and enjoyable. Then as if you could take no more, they carry there own line of microbrews. The English Brown Ale and the Porter were very similar, but since they were both flavorfull it was quite acceptable. They also carried a Strawberry Blonde which actually tasted like strawberries. Not my cup of tea per se, but a well crafted brew.
We also tried their ice picks (ice tea and vodka) and were pleasantly surprised by how good - and might I add, how dark, their ice tea is.
Excelent meals and would certainly stop everytime I'm on the island
PS: try the sweet potato french fries.
The food was okay, not good, just okay. But the beer wasn't either. I am not micro-brew snob, but it just didn't hit the spot. We tried 2 different styles (a wheat and a IPA) and neither one seemed to hit the target. We wished we would have choosen a better place for lunch.
In the 17 years that I have been going to Block Island, I had the worst experience, August '07, at the Mohegan Cafe. If it was not for the bartender I would have walked out. Everything was terrible from the service to the uncooked food with no apologies. The dining room was half full so it wasn't too busy to concentrate on the patrons. I should have gone with my first instinct to walk out.
Manager refused to accept a valid drivers license. Age discrimination, as most patrons were older and seemed to get much better treatment. The workers were unfriendly and obviously knew nothing about the beer they were serving. When asked what a recommended beer was, Corona was suggested. Beer is made with malt-extract, and is therefore of inferior quality. Main reason not to go is the horrific service and the management who are on power trips.
Mohegan Cafe is right on the main tourist strip, so we thought it might be overpriced. It also is basically a brewpub, so we thought the food would be burgers and wings. Wrong on both counts. The seafood paella and the scallops were both excellent and came with delicious big salads. The house stout beer was also very good, as was the chocolate cake. Our server was a bit brusque, but, hey, it was the end of a busy season. Recommended.
