Addis Red Sea Ethiopian Rstrnt

Description

Dining without utensils is the rule at Addis Red Sea a South End eatery. The rich Ethiopian stews and other aromatic dishes are meant to be enjoyed with injera , a spongy flatbread perfect for soaking up every tasty tidbit. The atmosphere here is dim and exotic in a romantic way. Locals crowd around tiny woven tables and share bottles of mead. The inexpensive dishes are also meant for sharing, and the selection is sure to please carnivores and vegetarians alike. You may also enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your selections.

My favorite restaurant in Boston
Can't beat the food! Many vegetarian options. I recommend the spicy lentils (yemeser wot) and collard greens (gomen wot). All dishes are served with injera, a soft tortilla-like bread that you use to pick up the soft stew-like dishes. Recommend asking for the dark brown injera (which is made from tef, an Ethiopian whole grain) in addition to the normal white injera made from flour. Try the Ethiopian wines and Lager as well - wish I could get these other places. Love the ambiance: intimate, peaceful, exotic. Addis is head and shoulders above other local Ethiopian restaurants like the one in Central Square.

Perfection!
By ,
I enjoyed everything about this place! The service is friendly and fast. The food is FANTASTIC! And, the atmosphere is perfect for a romantic dinner or large group. I would suggest only going here with people you feel comfortable around (not a good first date place) because you will be eating with your hands and likely to be sharing food. It is very sensual if you are there on a date with someone special. It is easy to forget the sensual piece if you are out with a larger group but if you are 1:1 with someone you are not close to, it may feel awkward. One of my FAVORITE restaurants in Boston!!

Get your hands dirty... Delicious, earthy dishes
By ,
Their Doro wot (one of their most popular chicken dishes) is incredible and a must-have if you eat meat! They have wonderful veggie dishes and sides from carrots/potatoes/cabbage (atakilt), collard greens, to spicy lentils... vegetarians/vegans will find this place to be a delight on their palettes and conscience. The appetizer with the spiced cottage cheese and butter is very tasty and worth a try for sure. Their portions are only bowl-size... about 1.5 dishes per person are probably enough to satisfy the average group or couple. The dishes are served over crepe-like thin, moist spongey bread called injera. Their exotic food is well-spiced (not necessarily spicy) -- a masterpiece of complex flavors in a simple, earthy, home-made looking presentation. More subtle spices and much less oily or heavy-tasting than Indian food. Try their mango juice-- it's unforgettable... thick, honey-flavored sweet. They also offer honey wine which is a good complement with their dishes. Dressed in traditional lovely, long, flowing, white dresses, the Ethiopian waitresses glide among the little straw tables in this cozy world of warm colors. Service is a bit slow but the waitstaff are pretty friendly. This place is often very busy during the weekends... be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes if you come in during the peak hours. Ambiance is cozy, warm... casual enough for a group yet attractive enough for a romantic date as well. Located in South End, this place is in a fun neighborhood to explore. Get your hands dirty and dig in! A perfect way to get to know someone on a first date and a fun place for a group b-day. This is my favorite restaurant.
