Ma Soba

Description

Asian restaurants come and go, but Bostonians should hope that Ma Soba is here to stay. The restaurant's interior features glass windows that slide open to give the place an airy feel in the warmer months. Try the sushi or the green bean, orange and lychee salad. The Hunan dumplings, dim sum basket and grilled eggplant appetizers are popular. The sashimi and California rolls are fresh. The Tao General Chicken, a spicy tai dish, is a very popular entree.

They used basmati rice instead of sushi rice, and it was clear they didn't even bother adding rice vinegar to it! Ridiculous, who do they think they're fooling! On the other hand, if I was only rating the sashimi, I'd give it 4 stars... Needless to say, trying to cut corners by using cheap long-grain rice is unacceptable, never again.

Service between average and a tad below average. Portions are small for the price. Restaurant had both mango and avacado but refused to make mango-avacado roll on the spot for a vegetarian guest. Sweet shrimp hand roll had two pieces of shrimp and more rice than a rice ball plus the seaweed tasted rubbery and old. Uni was not fresh at all. The pieces of sushi were cut unevenly. Overall, there's no real skill in sushi preparation. If you're looking for great and authentic sushi bar offerings, do not waste your time here. Even if money is not an issue for you, I would not squander your pretty pennies here. It's just not worth it. FYI, the soy sauce for dipping sushi is extremely salty and the wasabi tasted like the kind made with powder. Edamame comes in a small wooden basket that is only good for max 2 people if you're only interested in about 12 edamame each. I'm disappointed with the quality of the food. I don't mind the price, but for the price I paid, I felt like I was not getting my money's worth in both quality and quantity. The one thing that I could not complain about was the miso soup. DO NOT order the vegetable dumplings, it's just not worth while.

Not very good service for the price you pay which is not too bad. Sushi was great, loved the interior design and the lighting drop design. Water only checked on us once (ran out of ginger). If the service improves then i would definatley rate it as perfect.

Service was horrible. The sushi is NOT the best.....the interior design job is great but the food is not the best. The rolls is on the rather small in size. I had sushi in other places that is way better. Like another person said, the chefs there are chinese. If you are looking for authentic, then you are not going to find it here. There are many other japanese resturants in Boston that is the same.....I rather go to old Fuji in Quincy than MASOBA.

It's okay there, the service is slow. I prefer symphony sushi on Gainsboro Street.

I go all the time
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/26/07
They serve the thickest cuts of sushi and the most creative and delicious rolls I've ever had in a sushi restaurant in Boston. The prices aren't terrible either.

Really Enjoyed It
By Harry, 12/7/06
I had a vegetarian option, which included an excellent side of seafood salad, which I highy recommend. The sushi was obviously very fresh and it makes me wonder if I should start eating raw fish and forsake my vegetarian ways.

Best sushi i've ever tasted
By Lisa, 4/22/06
I love the food, atmosphere, excellent service. I tried sushi in other places but Ma Soba got me addicted to the emperor roll, snow cone, and other things don't remember. This place is awesome! worth every cent!
