Terramia

Description

A true gem among all those rhinestones in the North End, this rustic but cozy trattoria with stucco walls and beamed ceilings specializes in creative interpretations of Italian classics. Behind Terramia's pane-windowed storefront on Salem Street is a busy trattoria decked out in linens, candlelight and paintings of the Italian countryside. Like the cuisine here, the atmosphere is elegant yet understated. Since opening in 1993, Terramia has aimed to convince North End diners that there was always more to Italian food than red sauce. Over the Years, the inventive and beloved restaurant has done a great deal of convincing. You'll find creative interpretations of seasonally-based classics here. The ever-changing menu incorporates seasonal vegetables and the catch of the day. Homemade pasta dishes feature unconventional preparation styles--ravioli is served open-faced, with scallops, shrimp and zucchini, in a lobster mascarpone sauce.

My wife and I went to Terramia last night (11/19/05) for her birthday. Our reservation was for 8:30 and we sat at about 9:00. This was perfectly acceptable to me on a Sat. night. The hostess was kind enough to direct us to a bar (The Push Cart) down the street where the bartnder would tell us when our table was ready. This is all very nice, but the Push Cart is not a real bar. They only serve beer, wine, and cordials. This was dissapointing to us. Overall dinner was very nice. I have only one complaint. Shortly after receiving our botttle of wine, my wife discovered her glass was dirty. No problem. I would expect a new glass and a new bottle of wine, but to my surprise the waiter poured the wine from the dirty glass into a new one. I was a bit horrified, but my wife was in a good mood and asked me to just let it go. I would reccomend this restaurant, but check your glass before the wine is poured.

Okay

It was nice but everyone makes a huge fuss over it and I didn't think it deserved it. But the food was pretty good.

Not worth the price
By *, 9/1/04
$50 for risotto and for a pasta dish, which, though delicious, was drowning in sauce. Combined with the dimness of the room (a bit too dark for a restaurant, in my opinion), identifying ingredients was impossible. The risotto was a bit lacking in asparagus and porcini mushrooms. The waitstaff was attentive though, and dinner came quickly. All together, pretty good, but for the price, I've had better.

What a nice meal, everything off the menu looked good. You just want to order everything. The service was excellent and the staff is friendly. The wine list is small but complete with excellent wines to choose from in all price ranges. I recommend this restaurant to anyone.
