Description

The Union Oyster House, located on the Freedom Trail, near Faneuil Hall, enjoys the unique distinction of being America's oldest restaurant. The Boston fixture, housed in a building dating back to pre-revolutionary days, started serving food in 1826 and has continued ever since with the stalls and oyster bar, where Daniel Webster was a constant customer, in their original positions.

The Union Oyster House wins a star over Legal Sea Foods just for its history. The food is outstanding (and fresh!) at both, but the Union's got a raw bar that can't be beat, and their menu is diverse. If you're looking for bargain basement prices on fresh seafood, this won't be your cup of tea, but if you don't mind paying for what you get, I highly recommend this establishment. Lunch often consists of 1/2 dozen cherry stone clams on the half-shell and a bowl of outstanding clam chowder. For dinner, we've had lobster pie and baked seafood plates that definitely pleased our palates. You really have to try this restaurant out!

Go for the history, not the food. Food was OK, but a bit expensive.

Although larger than one may suspect, and seemingly touristy, the food is remarkably (suprizingly) excellent. Scallops with linguine is all about the great scallops. Fried oysters are light and crisp. Steamed lobster is perfectly done. The chowder is arguably perfect. The onion soup has lots of flavor. Servers would appear challenged but make you feel as if you are the only customer. Also, great attentive service at a very crowded bar.

Historical. Old Building with initimate wooden booths and open table top seating.Good chowda. Good oyster stew. Dining for lunch or dinner. Not a gormet restaurant but one of character with above average quality. Local favorite baked beans boston style.

Decor isn't elegant but worth seeing once for historical value. Friendly staff. Dissappointing food...baked beans good, chowder so-so, ditto raw bar and fried clams. Skip the rest. Really.

Outrageously Horrible!Do not waste your money- food was boring, over-priced, and cold. Service was non-existent, and the place was terribly uncomfortable. Better food throughout Boston. Do not get sucked in!!!

Nice atmosphere. Great food, great prices and great people! 4 of us ordered mussels, steamers and lobster raviolo. Bill was around $60. The bartenders went out of their way to make us feel welcome, service was excellent. Boston Creme Pie.. is a must have! On a scale of 1-10 it's a 20.

Zagat way underrates this place maybe because it is not as expensive as other Boston restaurants. This restaurant is crawling with class, lobsters and history (Revolutionary War, JFK's favorite booth). Waitstaff are very cordial and accommodating; I've never had a disappointing dish in a half dozen visits. But even with reservations one spends lotsa time waiting in the bar. Close to the subway. Probably my favorite Boston restaurant.
