Description

Whiteface opened back in 1958 and is dedicated to the 10th Mountain Division. It was the skiing venue of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. The area is serviced by 10 lifts including one gondola, one high-speed quad, one fixed-grip quad, one triple, five doubles, and one Magic Carpet. There are 225 skiable acres. The average snowfall is around 168 inches per year. The resort is the new headquarters for the New York Ski Educational Foundation.ActivitiesSnowboarding: All 75 trails are open to snowboarders including a terrain park and 450-foot superpipe. Full snowboard and boot rental along with clinics are offered daily.Cross Country Profile: Not available on the mountain; however there are extensive world-class facilities at nearby Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid.LodgingApproximately 1,850 rooms are available within a 10-mile radius including the villages of Wilmington and Lake Placid.Winter RecreationLuge rides, bobsledding, public skating both indoor and outdoor, snowmobiling, tobogganing, dog sled rides, snowshoeing, tubing, and cross-country skiing in nearby Lake Placid.

Tall Mountain, Icy

Good tall mountain, right outside of Lake Placid, not terribly crowded but very icy up top. Winds sometimes shut the very peak down. good nightlife in lake placid, loved the local dive bars and Ubu ale (local brew, better than Guiness). Hockey is on everywhere in this town.
