Mt. Baldy

Description

There aren’t many of the classic ski areas left – a least those your granddaddy may remember. But, Mt. Baldy, north of Upland, Calif. off the 10 Freeway, is all of that and more. It’s close to a vast populations base, but lift lines don’t often pile up.Today’s Mt. Baldy isn’t much different that Grandpa might remember, except for snowmaking to the top of Skyline and Robins run. OK, so there’s no lake like in Big Bear and that snowmaking depends on a reservoir staying relatively full during the cold winter months. But, when it’s snowing the real stuff, as they say, head for these hills. To be sure, there’s beginner terrain, but what sets Mt. Baldy apart is the steepest vertical drop in SoCal. Skiing and riding is spread over 800 acres, with 26 runs across 3 mountains. The terrain is best suited for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders. You can ski, snowboard, go tubing, play in the snow, or enjoy scenic rides (even during the winter).Mt. Baldy, for trivia buffs, is only a nickname. The 10,064 foot peak is actually Mt. San Antonio and is the highest in the San Gabriel Mountains. Its namesake is St. Anthony of Padua, a 13th century priest. So, if you are looking for it on a topo map as Mt. Baldy, you won’t find it.The ski area’s beginnings came during World War II when a group of friends combined their “C” Ration gas coupons to go skiing. An enterprise called Mt. Baldy Ski Tows began operations in 1944.Mt. Baldy inherited some of the Hollywood glamour of the day and became somewhat a popular winter hangout for movie stars and celebrities.Skiers and snowboarders living in the Inland Valley find Mt. Baldy Ski Area an ideal perfect place to escape during the week for a few hours or a whole day of economical, uncrowded skiing.Directions: Take the Mountain Avenue exit in Upland off the 210 Freeway and go north following signs to Mt Baldy. You can also take the Baseline exit in Claremont and go north on Padua and turn right on Mt Baldy Road. Mt Baldy Road dead-ends in the ski area parking lot.Mt. Baldy is likely the best kept secret in SoCal skiing and riding, even after all these years. But, hit it right, and it can be your best day ever. ActivitiesSnowboarding: Ride anywhere on Mt. Baldy, but the terrain really opens up for snowboarding when you get to Chair 3. That’s where you will find riding on double black diamond runs in the trees to a several beginners’ options. The terrain park is off of Chair Four.Cross Country Profile: Not availableLodgingMt. Baldy is best suited for day visits, largely because there is no night skiing, and nearby lodging is scarce and sells out quickly. Mt Baldy Lodge, however, is located in the center of the village. There are six cabins to rent. The restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, and steaks. Get there early Sunday mornings for Missi's famous cinnamon rolls.Another good option is the Doubletree Hotel Claremont, 16 miles from the slopes at 555 Foothill Blvd.Winter RecreationSkiing and snowboarding, scenic rides and snow play.

New Mt Baldy Program Offers Unlimited Skiing
By Keith, 10/6/11
Mt Baldy Ski Lifts announced they have introduced a unique Membership Program. With monthly dues of $19.97 members will never have to purchase lift tickets but have unlimited year-round access to the mountain. “This program was developed because many of our skiers and snowboarders couldn’t afford, due to economic conditions, the lump sum payment for a season pass. Everybody can afford $19.97 a month and receive more value for their money, ” states Ron Ellingson President of Mt Baldy Ski Lifts. Mt Baldy is minutes north of Upland and Claremont off the 210 freeway. It is the closest ski resort to most of Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire and all of Orange and San Diego Counties. Mt Baldy Ski Lifts is open during the summer on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays for scenic rides, hiking and mountain biking. Dining is available at the Top of the Notch Restaurant located at the top of the chairlift. “With the Mt Baldy Membership programs customers will never have to purchase a lift ticket again. In essence customers are getting all the benefits of both a winter and summer season pass with monthly dues of $19.97. That’s it!” “As long as a member is good standing and current with dues, they get unlimited skiing, snowboarding and scenic rides in the summer.” “To our knowledge this program is unique and not offered by any other ski area.” Two seasons ago, in addition to increasing their snowmaking capabilities, Mt Baldy pioneered the “virtual season pass” program that offered skiers and snowboarders deep discounts on season passes. Unlike full season pass holders a physical season passes are not issued and ski reservations are required 24 hours in advance. Virtual season passes are still offered by Mt Baldy Ski Lifts and still available until opening day of the ski season. Ellingson continues, “A limited number of Charter memberships are being offered for a limited time with all activation fees waived. Membership just requires the initial payment of the first two months and then ongoing monthly billing of debit or credit card. That’s it!” “Unlike membership programs elsewhere, there’s no legalese and no long term commitments. Membership are month to month and may be cancelled at any time. Simply put, if monthly dues are paid, the customer gets complete year round access to the mountain. “ “We believe this program is revolutionary in the ski industry and it wouldn’t surprise us if other ski areas nationwide follow suit to help make year round recreation more affordable,” concludes Ellingson. I miss you Baldy
By steven and robin, 4/7/11
I love Robin's tree's and twilightzone and that treeless shoot below rentals, and huckamuck, and that one only the skiiers get to up on the face. I miss traversing from one side of the moutain to the other under chair 3 for my warmup. I miss the first season I was up there. I think its great that people like that bad reviewer can't hang. I miss teching my rock board in spring and taking that last chance to the parkinglot. I miss burying my lunch and sunblock various places on bonanza. I miss the races on 4. Most of all I miss charging. I will see you again Baldy, this time with my baby girl, showing her the time of her life, if Jesus doesn't return first.

Baldy, eh!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/11/11
For those who say Baldy is a good place to ski or board, I say your coo-coo! 1) The road driving here is scarry, too many turns 2) If you don't show up early for parking, you will have to hike up to the ticket windows (and parking sucks) 3) Sucks that you have to ride the lift which takes about 5 min in order to get to the top of the mountain (so much of a hassle) 4) Lifts have only 2 seats which make the process go by slow which means waiting in long lines, and they go up soo sloww 5) Steep mountains, but damn, the runs are soo short! If you know how to ride, it'll take you about 30-60 sec on each run! 6) Maybe there were some fun-box, but I don't recall seeing any =/ In my opinion, this resort is really small, and I would not pay that much for a lift ticket price. Yes, this have got to be the closest resort in SoCal, but I think the closest and best resort in SoCal is Mt.High and Big Bear Snow Summit (if some you consider that SoCal) Enjoy the season, runs, and have fun!

By tim, 1/19/10
As a nor cal native it was fantastic to find a real ski area in so cal. The snow depth is often a problem. But when they get snow, they are the best around.

You can literally ski anywhere and the double diamonds here are REAL Double Diamonds! Must catch it right after a storm, as it gets skiied out very quickly. Excellent character to this place, old, rustic and family owened and operated.
