Description

Walter Schoenknecht, the visionary behind Mount Snow in Vermont, created Mohawk Mountain in the Southern Berkshires, near Torrington. This is the oldest and largest ski area in Connecticut, and dubbed "the home of snowmaking." Schoenknecht was a snowmaking pioneer and was already figuring out how to make snow in 1948. The resort's 24 trails are all covered by snowmaking today, and most of them are available for night skiing. They renovated SnowHark's learning center area, and an extension has been placed on the resort's surface lift.ActivitiesSnowboarding: Snowboarding is allowed.Cross Country Profile: Cross-country skiing in the adjacent Mohawk State Forest.LodgingLodge, inns, hotels, B&Bs, cabins, and a cottage all available nearby.Winter RecreationThere is snowshoeing and cross country skiing available in the adjacent Mohawk State Forest although it is not administered or maintained by the ski area. Connecticut's Lichfield Hills region abounds in natural beauty, peaceful villages, art, concerts, and history.

Meh
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/27/11
i skiid here everyday for 3 years during the winter (Skii Team)...it has 2-3 runs that were marked as "expert" which compared to a run at a vermont mountain would be called "Beginner"... there are no jumps allowed, if ur caught making one your asked to leave by skii patrol. EXPENSIVE food..like $1.50 for water and $3.00 for a flavord drink...place is usually overcrowded by old people who take up the whole run by going from side to side of each run...or parents with their 4 year old kid on a 50 ft leash making it impossible to not get closelined....place is a mess i'd recommend going to butternut er one of those places if your limited to CT mountains. hope i didnt completely make you distaste the mountain but in my prespective the place was not up my standerds...hope i helped.

Great escape if weather ok!
By Mike, 2/25/10
Live north of NYC. Fun, reasonably priced. Check the snow/weather conditions before visiting. Offer great 1/2 day pass rates.

Great place for kids to learn to ski!
By Ski Hawk, 2/25/10
I live very close to Mohawk and ski there often. The new ski program for beginners is just great. The Magic Carpets help the beginners develop confidence. I am an advanced skier and I am still racing.. Mohawk works for me because it is so close to my home but if I want longer runs and challenging terrain there is no place like Vermont ski resorts.
