Ninety miles due east of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino National Forest, Bear Mountain serves as a haven for a rabid cadre of snowboarders and freeskiers who play in the area's three terrain parks and pipes along with a double black run sure to get the most adventurous freeskier's blood rushing. The prevailing vibe is so boarder-centric that the area also fields its own pro snowboard team.ActivitiesSnowboarding: Snowboarding is allowed on-site along with a terrain park. Much better than advertised.
By ,
1/11/12 here was probably the best skiing conditions I've experienced in January. The coverage was thin but even --no brown spots. This made for a a pretty fast track. It appeared the entire mountain was open even Geronimo. For a vertical skier like me it almost perfect. Very little waiting in lines. The staff was very friendly & knowledgable. I was put in demos & they performed great. The parking lot seemed oddly full for a non-holiday, but I had plenty of room to ski. That maybe due to the black & double black diamonds that I like. You only needed a jacket @ the top of the top runs. GO!

go big or go home!

great place to board and have some fun on the park's features. liesure skiers need to go to summit. but boarders or skiers who like big jumps and jibs bears the best. mammoth is great but 7 hours of driving. i'll take to 3 hour drive and not get a ticket on the way which is very easy on your way to mammoth. this season has been the best in 30 years!

You call this a line?
By ,
My biggest gripe with both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain is that there appears to be NO line management. Near the head of the line you end up in a giant merging mosh pit of skiers and boarders who are either bullying their way through or tentatively trying to figure out when they should go next. It's not pleasant. Thankfully, this is only an issue at the base of the mountain, and my family skis/boards higher up most of the day. I assume this is mostly due to under staffing, however, I've also witnessed some pretty derelict attendants on duty. Any accountability up there? Is the guy inside the shack up top allowed to be on his cell phone? For hours? Really? Shaping up the staff on the lifts and staffing the lines would make a world of difference here.
