More than 250,000 people descend on the area rsch winter. Usually, you can ski and ride at A-Basin until mid-June. ActivitiesSnowboarding: Snowboarding is available on all runs. Low on Luxury, HIGH on Pure Ski Adventure
By Forrest, 11/19/09
A Basin is what skiing looked like before ski areas became "ski resorts." Most of A Basin's resort neighbors are more concerned with their spa facilities and abundance of Disneyesque family fun. A Basin, however, is focused on the pure excitement of skiing as sport. There are no high speed quads or mountain concierges, but you will find the most challenging terrain in Summit (or even possibly Eagle) County. And all of this at a very low price. I purchased a two day pass from Mountain View Sports in 2008 for $78. That won't even buy ONE DAY at Keystone or Breck, and Lord knows it won't even buy lunch in Beaver Creek. If you like classic rock, local ski hippies and totally vicious vert, A Basin is calling your name. If you're looking to show off your new custom boots and metallic ski suit, save it for Vail.

The Legend
By Steve, 10/16/09
A basin is A basin, those of us that like it have come to love it. It has the steepest stuff you want to ride, it also has more rocks than anywhere. You will ding up your skis or board even when they have a 60 inch base. The lifts are slow but that means less people on the slopes, the run out on in Montezuma sucks but you should be skiing Pali anyway. Dress prepared for a lot of wind, ski a lot of wind blown stuff. I live in Vail and that is the best if you know the mountain but when I meet friends from Denver, its usually at A Basin, Breck is a distant second keystone is for Midwesterners.

Still a favorite, after all these years!
By StinkyBritches, 10/9/09
Arapahoe Basin is where I fell in love with snowboarding. It was late May, and the "corn" snow was soft squishy, and FAST. I popped in my favorite GD bootleg into my Walkman tape deck (yes, it was a LONG time ago), and cruised the bowl from top to bottom. The sun was hot, the beers at the beach were warm, and the snow was cold. "Epic" is an overused word, but I still remember that day. Now, it is my old friend. I don't hang out there like I used to, but we keep in touch. Midweek at A-Basin is STILL alot of fun, and with the addition Montezuma Bowl, the front side has powder stashes all morning. The trees are friendly, and occasionally the blue hue of Ganga can be seen rising up from them. If that isn't your thing, ride on by. If it is, stop on by. The locals do not bite. One word of advice: if A-Basin reports the most snow on a given morning, go to the mountain with the second most snow. The mountain gets CRAZY crowded on big powder days.

Favorite of Locals and Day Skiers, for Skiing
By be5tfun4u, 11/3/08
Long time Colorado skiers know that Its called the Legend because of when it was founded, because its base is above 10,000 ft and until Breck built a lift 13 ft higher, it had the highest lift in the lower 48. No ski village here, never will be. The locals party at 'the beach' the reserved parking at the base, bringing grills, tiki torches and Hawaiian shirts. People change into their long underwear in the parking lot. Very few color coordinated 'ski outfits' matching the skis and boots here. Only place where you hear whoops and screams of joy all over the mountain throughout the day on a regular basis. The locals and day skiers are friendly and won't sit on the lift staring straight ahead, ignoring attempts to strike up a conversation, or look down there nose at you. The upper mountain lifts usually don't have very long lines. Have been getting a season's bonus pass for over 6 years.
