decided to upgrade from camping to "eco friendly" lil grass shacks which are totally made of plastic...not one blade of grass...toxic, off gassing all night and contributing to mold in the carpet...like sleeping in a hefty trash bag...so sad on such a lovely beach these non bio-degradable disney shacks are most certainly anything but eco-friendly...false advertising on the website...beware if you have allergies..

Going back again - Hana Hou!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/12/09
We were sad and a bit apprehensive when we heard Princess Kawananakoa's summer home burned down however, we decidede not to cancel our annual camping trip. This is our sixth year at Malaekahana and it did seem like 'Tutu's Hale' was something out of the 70's hippie era, or perhaps visiting your favorite Auntie's ...
My first time visiting this campground. We stayed two nights, from Sunday to Tuesday. Arrived right before the gate closed. We camped at tent area 1, near the river, there was no one around us, which was nice. Had an awesome time, the hot showers were about 75 yards away and there was a sink and bathroom (rudimentary) only 50 yards away. We had ...
Although the place was beautiful, that beauty did not extend to the soundscape. The highway - just a stones throw away - brings with it the urban subwoofers fopr which a "natural" or "eco" vacation was supposed to be the cure. The landscape: BREATHTAKING. The soundscape: STAY IN THE CITY, their is no chance of escape here....all ...

My home away from home! Camping with feeling safe.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/06/09
Friends of Malaekahana is a beautiful camp site which also offers Yerts/Hale, beach cabins priced just right, hot water showers and more. It's perfect for those who like to relax, go fishing, surfing, kayaking, diving, play and swim on an uncrowded clean beach. Being a women and a mother who loves the outdoors I am picky to where I camp, but, ...

Wonderful vibrations
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/30/08
I loved the scenery and most of the staff. The ladies in the office were wonderful and very patient although they seemed very overworked, phone never stopped ringing. I loved the tunnel of love. The only negative was the nasty security guy who seems prejudiced against haoles.
I have been coming to North Shore Oahu over a 17 year period and am well aware of Malaekahana Kahuku Section. It’s one of the best places to stay on Oahu if you want to camp out or rough it. This former summer home of Princess Kawananakoa is a lot like "Gilligan's Island" now.
I believe the web address is ...

Rude staff - be careful where you pitch your tent!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/25/08
The beautiful scenery and decent amenities were quickly forgotten with a rude encounter with a staff member. Being a private campground, the staff constantly patrols the area. A staff member watched us struggle to pitch our tent for an hour in the wind. When we finally got it up and began to enjoy it, another staff member began cursing and ...

Rude Staff
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/09/08
I have been a resident of Hawaii for the past 9 years. I have frequently camped at this campground. However, the past few years I have noticed a change in staff attitude. I have experienced rudeness even over the phone when making reservations. It does make for a very unpleasant camping experience, when you are camping with rude staff member ...
We have been to this facility several times... both tent camping and cabin rentals. Although the accommodations are substandard and the prices are not cheap (all things considered)... it is camping and we get that and up until this past weekend thoroughly enjoyed out 2-3x/yr visits. This past weekend, however, we rented one of the new cabins that ...
