To go to Basilique de Fourvière you must take what we call a "funiculaire" which is some kind of very old little trolley. It is quite scary I must say, especially when it's raining and the noise around is like criiic craaac. But once you're on top, you have the most amazing view of the city, especially at night. From la Fourvière you can oversee Lyon and the amazing lights of the city. Today is the Light day, too bad your sight does not have pictures of this feast that occurs every year on Dec. the 8th.
From the Basilique de Fourviere you can see almost all of Lyon. I went in the late winter so there weren't many tourists and the atmosphere was breathtaking.
I suggest skipping the funiculaire (cable-car) that takes you to the top. Instead, take a leasurely walk up through St. Jean and Veiux Lyon. There are many wonderful things to be seen that you miss when you take the easy way up.
