I was born & Reaised in Oregon, but have been away for 22 years, & I still go back to visit the Chisese & Rose Gaardens, every trip back. The views of Portland from the West Hills alone are worth the trip, which is minutes from Portland.
Overall I liked it but nothing compared to the Japanese Garden. I think its best feature is that it's just North of downtown and for people working in the city it's an easy walk to an extremely peaceful place, right in the middle of a busy city. Nice ambiance and very quiet.
This was really a fun place to spend an afternoon. It was during an intense heat wave, and I wouldn't really recommend going when it's that hot since the tea room is not air conditioned and was stifling. The tea was delicious though, and there are many to choose from. The grounds were beautiful and I loved that it was a block right in the middle of the city but still serene and peaceful.
The Gardens were truly beautiful. It was a lovely surprise since I was familiar with Japaneses gardens but not Chinese gardens. I took many pictures and as a result am taking my daughter and granddaughter to see it during my next visit to Portland. I especislly enjoyed the architecture and furniture in the garden rooms and the spectacular water lillies.
Even though the garden is beautifully crafted it is small and you never quite get to feel like you are in China instead of the U.S. You can still see Portland's skyscrapers all around you. Yes it is absolutely beautiful, however it is really small. There are other places in Portland to go that are just as beautiful, much bigger and a greater ...
Visiting the Classical Chinese Garden in Portland is an exquisite experience for all the senses. It's so much more than just plantings. All the carefully crafted organic and inorganic delights reward one who pays attention to the most prosaic and the most elaborate detail from the pattern of raindrops on the lake to the carved ginko panels. ...

I explored this beautiful garden during a field trip for a Japanese language class. The striking beauty and carefully designed order induces a calming sense of serenity. From the relaxing tea houses to the bridges that transport you from one world to the next, you will surely find your path to inner peace at the Classical Chinese Garden here in Portland.
A beautiful recreation of a classical Chinese garden. The handiwork is incredible. Very scenic, and everything they say about "oasis in the middle of the city." But it's hard to totally forget all the buildings of downtown/Chinatown looming just beyond the walls of the garden. Still, I'd love to go back sometime on a clear night, if given the chance.
