We have been fishing from the pier for a long time. Each time we go I am disgusted by the appearance of the pier. From what I have seen only "Humans" fish from the pier. The place is filthy and unkept. I believe the city of Newport News should make plans to clean up the area so that it will be a more enjoyable family oriented place. ...
Well i do agree that a port a pottie halfway down the pier would be nice, but i thought to write about the fishing mostly... Well the fishing can be good depending on a few things... You will need wire leaders for some of the bluefish. i did catch one which chewed through my 25 lb leader. also caught a nice 1 1/2 striper and quite a few croaker ...
Went yesterday and caught very little. Pier would be awesome if there was a consession stand and restroom halfway down the pier or maybe a rolling drink/hotdog cart going up and down the thing. Stongly suggest carrying an umbrella for the shade. Virginia should get behind this place and help those who run it, maybe put up awnings every thirty feet ...
fished on this pier once and caught big croaker but then bought a boat and now i start going to the tunnel, the fish are alot bigger, went two weeks ago and caught a cooler fule of 2 pound croaker in less than three hours. Both are good places to fish but the tunnel has more and bigger fish, the only thing is in the after noon the water get rough on somedays.
The bathrooms are much improved, but blame city of Newport News for upkeep. They have never taken care of this place, they rent it out for half of what they take in and do nothing for the people that run it. Anyway, there is no better place to spend as much time as you want, drink, smoke whatever and oh yeh catch a lot of fish. Ill piss over the railing when the time comes.
I've been going to this pier for 3 years. Went to the pier 2 weeks ago, caught over 70 croaker, bluefish and even some small spot. It was a little windy and a front was forecasted to come through the next day so that may have helped. What also works for me is to come with several different types of live bait - you never know what may work from one day to the next. Will be there this weekend for sure!
We were at the pier this week, 5/12-5/16 and the pier was clean, as were the restrooms. The boy taking the money at the gate was very polite and friendly, too. We got good exercise going back and forth looking for those BIG croaker to fish that we kept hearing about. All we caught were small small fish, and lines of people who didn't know how to cast. Other than that it was fine.
My husband and I went this past weekend 4/26/08 and the fishing was great. The croakers are running. We are going again this weekend. It opens at 9:00am and closes at 11:30pm. Starting Memorial Weekend they will be open 24 hours. They have new bathrooms and have started replacing the rails. See Ya There Kim
I LIKE THE SIZE OF THE CROACKES AND SPOTS YOU CAN CATCH. FISHING IS GOOD. THE PEIR IS VERY GOOD FOR FISHING IN THE EVENING AND EARILY MORNING, THE KIDS LOVE IT BECAUSE THEY CATCH FISH NO MATTER WHAT SIZE AND THEY ARE HAPPY
My friend and myself travels twice a month every year from Garysburg, North Carolina to catch fish. There were good times and bad times. Just like going for relaxation. He is the real fisherman. I hate the long walk. Restrooms too far.
