This is the place to go if you and a group of friends just want to go out and have fun. At night musicians come out and play for the crowds. Nice little Resturaunts and gift shops too. A must visit if you are in Madrid
What a beautiful fun diversion from your relaxing day in Madrid. Walk inside the cobblestones and think of the time they executed people here. Imagine you are a Matador killing a bull. Tons of history here. The plaza is gorgeous with tons of restaurants and stores. Street Entertainers gather here too.The only warnings are to watch for pickpockets ...

Plaza Mayor

This was a very grim place. It was not well kept and it was nasty. It was shocking that people of Madrid suggested, repeatedly, that we go and visit Plaza Mayor.
I like the atmosphere and the view.In a pub on the same place there are one price of the tapas in the menu ,but the waiter brought me other, more expensive, which had written down on the paper by his own hand.

A must visit place!

My first impression when I set foot on the square was it's so ancient and yet amazing. The red walls and murals, the stone pavement and terazzas, the street artists and coin collectors, were all in unison to make the square alive and busy allday long. You can just sit and enjoy the scenery while drinking Sangria and eating variety of tapas.

Madrid is a city where one can happily get lost because there is so must beauty and history everywhere you go. Not too far up the street on Atocha from Plaza Mayor is a great cafe called "Peter Pan," great food to nibble on and "zumo" or orange juice that's just as great as the food.

Haven't really spent a lot of time in this place..
When we came here, it was extra early in the morning but the visit was still interesting..
I wonder what it looks like when it's busy with activities.. I just have to see on our next visit..
Art works in chairs and posts are truly picture-worthy... An experience not to miss..
We went here during the day for lunch. Some places have great prices others do not. Pay attention to which umbrellas and tables go with which menu and prices. We thought we were sitting at the 6 euro paella tables but it ended up being the 20 euro paella tables. It had great people watching, but it was pretty warm. There were not any ...
Plaza Mayor is a great hangout for day or evening. Many restaurants and just a great setting. Some entertainers worth the tips (and many that are not). Get used to waiving NO to the constant vendors walking table to table. Just down the hill is the oldest restaurant in the WORLD, Botin. Dates back to early 1700s. Will find many tourists there. Met several folks from America everytime there.

If you leave Madrid without visting Plaza Mayor you have experienced everything this nice city has to offer. This place is great for people watching. There's all kinds of activities and very often art shows and other fairs going on in the open-air square. This place has a lot of history to it, which makes it even more interesting.
