Gate-way to Wilderness HeavenWe've been to New Zealand three times. Te Anau is a gateway to backcountry wilderness areas like Kelpler, Milford and even Routeburn treks. All of these backpacking areas are awesome. Quick access to more tourist-type excursions (e.g. the Milford or Doubtful Sound cruises) are also convenient from Te Anau.

Take me with you!I would definately recommend staying at Te Anau for visits to Milford Sound. We took a tour to Milford Sound with "Trips and Tramps" tour company. They have a fleet of small buses and are able to provide a more personable service.
