Leiden is medium size city which is only 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam. I had a really great time there for almost 3 months. So I pretty much had seen everything in this city. There are canals through out the city which makes it kind of romantic.

This town was great for nightlife. I bar hopped here two nights. The bars I visited were full of people whether you wanted to dance, just drink, meet people, or enjoy your own friends. If you want to barhop like the local Dutch, order the house beer.

Amsterdam is a big city compared to Leiden. Leiden still has that small town feel. The streets are narrow, clean, and safe Shopping was great at the market. I visited several cities in Holland, Leiden was my favorite for its slower pace, Windmills and family friendly atmosphere. I went to Leiden three times over a course of a 10 day trip. Also ...

if you have some days in holland to kill and you're bored of amsterdam. theres some fun open air markets where you can pick up cute, cheap clothes .. and some small museums that are ok to peruse as well. its nice to enjoy the ambiance of leiden .. and its worth going to if you have some extra time. you arent missing THAT much though, if you opt not to go to leiden.
