You can enjoy the scenery of Alatau
on the way to its top by cable car.Alatau is just a short bus or taxi trip (about 15 km southeast) from Almaty. Visitors can stay in Almaty or at Medeu itself, as hotels and restaurants are available. The round trip by taxi from city center cost about 10000 tenke.(1US= 148 tenke)

Ok i have read many reviews on different web sites and so many different stories from good to bad about Kazakhstan. I have not been to Almaty but lived and worked in Kazak for 18 months,,,not a very beautfull area, however.I do plan to do Almaty this spring.

I was there. Its nice and very original from other countries that I used to be. No problems with police or locals. But its not so cheap that it seems to be.

It's a great surprise to find so nice city in this region.

I worked for more than a year in Almaty. I have worked and lived in more than 20 countries in my life and I can say that Almaty is my favourite place.
People are extremely friendly, foreigners are most welcome and tourism is picking up.
Almaty is a wonderful place for beautiful scenery, nice encounters with great people and amazing night life... I hope I will have the chance to go there again.

A wonderful place, unfortunately not known enough. Flying over there remains expensive and the tourism indutry is still 'embryonic'. The country is surrounded by giant Russia and China and still reflects some old 'communism legacy'. But the locals are really great people with sense of honor and visitors are very well treated.
