If you like temple, You should go to Kamakura. It is a place where you can touch Buddhism. There are many temples. It has good atmosphere. I like it because looks like Kyoto. If you go to Tokyo, You should go to Kamakura because Kamakura is next to Tokyo! It's in Kanagawa prefecture.

Cultural History at its finest

A short (about an hour, depending on where you are staying in) train ride from Tokyo brings you to Kamakura. Once the seat of power in Japan, it is today home to some of the most important shrines and temples in Japan.
It is a place that I very highly recommend to anyone visiting Japan (and especially Tokyo). I do recommend you take a FULL day ...
If you have a day to spare, this is a reasonably easy train ride from Shinjuku after a number of transfers. Had some of the best unagi and kampachi at a restaurant near the water (name? uh.). Visiting the shrines is a peaceful experience with some great views of the coast and the touristy shopping can even be fun as well. One option on the way back to Tokyo is to stop off at Yokohama for dim sum in Chinatown.

What a nice town

Our Japan rail passes got us there for free (aside from the initial cost of the rail pass) and the train ride was only an hour. Beyond the buildings and concrete of Tokyo, we started to ride through actual trees! ...

Living Kamakura

20-year resident in Japan, currently living in the historical district of Kamakura.
Kamakura is a very small town with very big ambitions. It is currently campaigning to obtain UN World Heritage Site status. History is oozing at the seams, however, the stitching is so strong that the novice cannot truly appreciate Kamakura's place in ...

Loved Kamakura
By A Yahoo! Contributer, 06/29/05
I lived in Japan for 3 years; husband was in the Navy. Kamakura is the one place that we made sure we took relatives when they visited. It is just an amazing city, with all the shrines. Stepping into a shrine is like stepping back in time. You get a real old Japan feel. The highlight for me was the Diabutsu. He is the most amazing statue that just ...
