  • Best city in Tuscany
    By Patrick, 02/07/07
It is quiet (no speeding mopeds or honking cars), it is safe, it is clean (no graffiti). It is NOT for anyone looking for a party. If you just want to relax and blend into the woodwork. Go. By the second day, you will start to recognize people about town. (Yes, the city center is that small.)

  • Good and old fashioned
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/07/07
We visited Lucca as an "extra" and unplanned part of our honeymoon...and loved it. We had most destinations in our trip planned, but left one day open in Tuscany. As we read more about it, Lucca was an obvious choice and did not disappoint. Touristy, but not obnoxiously so, and the medieval feel was great. Also, not many places any more where you can stay within a fortress-like city wall. Highly recommend it.

  • City of Contrasts
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/02/06
Enjoyed by all the family (20-68year olds)
Don't miss the atmospheric house where Puccini lived, especially if you are a music buff.
The huge city walls are a quiet leafy haven to walk or cycle around.
Don't forget to notice the way the old arena has developed over the centuries with houses and shops being incorporated into the original ...

  • I love Lucca!
    By apple, 09/18/05
I loved Lucca because there was tons of things to see and to do. It is the most charming city in Tuscany. It doesn't have a lot of turists like Florence and Siena, but it has just as old and interesting history. If you go to Pisa, stay only long enough to see the campo dei miracoli. Then go to Lucca. It's totally worth it

  • A Lovely City
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/05/05
Lucca is located about an hour away from Florence (If you use the train). And I find it is well worth the ride. Some things to do in Lucca are to look at Lucca's Outdoor Antiques Market, bike or walk on the walls, walk around and look at all the cute little stores, and look inside their catherdral. Overall, I would not suggest staying there for more than one night. I find this a good day trip from Florence.

  • Mostly Undiscovered
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/14/05
A great little Tuscan town. Perfect for a couple of days of relaxation, or as a base to see more of Tuscany. Its preserved medieval walls are a park and you can rent a bike and ride the walls of the city and even the entire town safely. Less than an hour from Florence, 15 minutes to Pisa, and 20 minutes to the beach it is well located. Good food, good shopping, great town.

  • Puccini's birthplace makes a great Tuscan excursion!
    By Elysian, 07/14/05
I loved Lucca! It's quiet, small, and easily accessible by train from Florence. One of the highlights for me was visiting Puccini's home. I'm an opera singer, so I'm a little partial! :) Lucca has a great summer music festival where they bring in some rather big artists, so if you can go during late June-early July, you'll ...

  • Loved it!
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/05/05
Beautiful and historical. We spent 6 days there and I walked around the city each day shopping & sightseeing. People were friendly and many spoke English (especially in the walled city). The city walls were the highlight. City gates were very impressive!

  • Beautiful Walled Town
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/23/05
Lucca is a well preserved Tuscan town that has all of the charm of a hill town without having to walk up & down all those hills. Lucca is famous for its medieval Wall surrounding the town which gives the town a distinct look & feel.

Enjoy a glass of wine at a restaurant in one of the many piazzas. Beware the aggressive pigeons - we were enjoying some appetizers when some uninvited guests flocked to join us.
