Honestly, I found Avignon to be a dull place for a day trip. The Palais du Papes was very empty, and the audio guides are distracting at best. The Pont Saint-Bénézet bridge is slightly more interesting, and offers a great view of the river but it seems ridiculous to require an admission fee to cross over half a bridge. The town square is nice and charming, but other towns in southern France are just as nice.

I lived in Avignon as a student for 4 months, and I loved the city. It is small enough to really get to know and appreciate, has plently of stuff to do and see, great restaurants, and is convienently located as a stop to some other local sites.

I loved this town. It is picturesque and full of history, primarily papal, and art. It is easy to navigate (walk) and very user friendly.
