I lived in Avignon as a student for 4 months, and I loved the city. It is small enough to really get to know and appreciate, has plently of stuff to do and see, great restaurants, and is convienently located as a stop to some other local sites.

I loved this town. It is picturesque and full of history, primarily papal, and art. It is easy to navigate (walk) and very user friendly.

A great place to stay in Provence

As a traveler, I'd really only hit the big cities before...Paris, London, Tokyo. And while they have their charms (world-class museums, endless things to do), they all tend to feel kind of the same after a while.
