The market in Otavallo was fantastic - and I am not a shopper. You are expected to haggle for the price, we were told that 40% cheaper is a target tho that was not always the case maybe between 10-20%. The silver jewellry was beautiful, I wish I bought more. The Otavalans are lovely people, and will haggle amicably and if you do not purchase - ...
This is a very beautiful town about 2 hours north of Quito. It is right on the Panamerican Hiway. It is best to hit this town on a Saturday when the market is at its largest. The indian market in the Plaza de Panchos is runs 7 days aweek from around 8am to 4pm but on Saturday they also close down Calle Sucre (Sucre St.) and have venders all up ...

Ali Shungu Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/28/05
I have had the pleasure of guiding groups of American climbers in Ecuador since 1992. One of the highlights of every expedition is our trip to Otovalo and our nights in luxury at the Ali Shungu Hotel. The owners, Margaret and Frank, have built a superb hotel, with a beautiful garden, lovely staff, superb food and the best showers in South America. The Ali Shungu always generates the highest praise from our clients. It is an oasis.

Always go to Otavalo
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/27/05
Love the high quality crafts and friendly people. Stayed at an American-run hotel near the crafts markets (can't remember the name). They had excellent food and musicians played at night.
Do not stay at Puerto Lago. It is too expensive and not worth it.
Ecuador is an awsome and amazingly diverse country. Otavalo might not be the first place you think to visit, but it gives you insight to the indian culture and their many amazing crafts. You can purchase bags, clothing, carvings, hats, etc. for far less than you would expect and you get to meet this amazing group of people. I have traveled to many ...
Otavalo is an small, quaint, historic kind of town, sorrounded by the beautiful Andes mountains. People are hardworking, humble jet proud of their indian roots. Good place to find burgain prices for pure wool, and leather products of interesting design, Which are display proudly in Otavalo's exotic market places. I recommend it for a relaxing getaway, but nearby Quito have more exciting things to see and do as well.
