After spending 3 days in Arenal, I was somewhat disappointed in Tamarindo. The water is grimy and full of trash. The city is filthy. There are large, open air drainage trenches filled with smelly, disgusting water on the side of the roads. The souvenir shops are grossly overpriced and all sell the same junk.
Every body! Please let me introduce you a wonderful tamarindo. TAMARINDO village, which has a sizeable foreign community, boasts a great selection of restaurants, a lively beach culture and some nightlife, at least during high-season
Very chilled out little town, right on the beach, safe, about an hour from Liberia airport. Great place to watch your kid learn to surf! Stayed at Diria which was good value - we ventured out into town for meals. Walk thru estuary at Playa Grande towards witch's rock - look out for thorns.
Tamarindo is definitely a great place to start your Costa Rican adventure. It has such a island/European flair with nice resorts that will not intimidate the inexperienced traveler. What I mean is that this city has just enough sophistication so as to also not be just a tourist attraction. If you are looking for great nightlife, nice beaches (there were about 10 different ones to choose on the road) you will not be dissappointed.

A Great Place, Whether You're a Hippie or Not
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/01/08
This place has the best hotels and restaurants in Costa Rica! Check out Pachanga (fish, meat), Las Balsas (pizza), and Nogui's (meat). A great place to stay is Luna Llena, which just opened an adjacent restaurant.

My wife, daughter, and I were just in Tamarindo Jan. 31st & Feb. 1st. My daughter and I waded across the northern tidal estuary to Playa Grande both days. My wife choice not to. We have now returned to Colorado. My wife is OK. My daughter & I both are still exhibiting some form of contact dermititis - splotchy rash, widely scattered in ...

Vacation rentals offer best value in Playa Grande
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/07/06
We rented an entire house in Flamingo for 8 people. The location was great-- close to Tamarindo, but far enough to get away for peace and quiet!
Our rental was half the price of a hotel in most destinations, and most are not as nice as the private home we rented. We had a great time, and loved the staff and service which was very personal and attentive.

What a wonderful vacation. Beautiful beaches. The weather was great. The restaurants in the area were outstanding with fresh fish from the area. If you like surfing, this is the place to be. Friendly people. Going back in November.
A beautiful beach in the Costa Rica style. Pure sand, intense sun, great surf, fine hotels, what more could you ask for. And while you're at it stop by the Capitain Suize ( if you're not staying there you should be) and rent a horse for a ride on the beach.
