Punta Arenas is a great place to fly into in order to get to the exquisite beauty of Southern Chile and Argentina. It is a interesting little town, but my advice is to quickly head to Puerto Natales, a more interesting chill mtn. town.
I had a great time in punta arenas, it was absolutely magnificent. And the hiking was absolutely awesome! The mountains and the beach nearby, not really for swimming, but you do get to see some people surfing ocationally... it was absolutely beautiful.
Punta Arenas offers basic to luxury accomodations and a very convenient starting point for any hiking or group tour to Torres del Paine and other National Parks.
