The hostels seemed to me the best places to stay, with friendly hosts and their families. You can also make arrangements with other guests to visit moais and sites outside town in a small group (less expensive transport and guides). We rented a bungalow and stayed 2 weeks on Rapa Nui and we were never bored. Lots of wonderful things to do & see, scuba, horseride, beaches (3), and lots to visit petroglyphs, museum, volcano, festival, and, of course, moais. I spent a week on Easter Island and loved every moment. The locals are very friendly and hospitable. Fun activities like scuba, horseback riding, and going to Anakena Beach.
