  • Awful!
    By RHJ, 12/29/06
I used to live here. Not only is it very dangerous, it is dirty and filled with slums. The only thing this place has to offer is the curve. However, if your looking for affordability, it is that.

  • God plays cruel jokes now and then
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/12/06
Hmmm...Altoona. A has been type of town, that is in need of some serious urban renewal. Most of the city is covered in slums, which is a shame since there are some unique structures. The drug problem for such a small city seems to be extreme.

For pluses, it is cheap, and the people are very friendly. The city is trying to change itself, with ...

the other reviews "seem" contrived to advertise. definatly come check out the small city, it needs your contributions, it has some history, although short lived. some beautiful buildings, historical railroad, and lots of bars and churches. as for the natives, they are a mixed bag some nice some not so.

  • A Family Favorite!!!
    By mary, 11/16/05
Our family loves Altoona! If you are traveling with children Altoona has a lot to offer. There is the Benzels Bretzel Factory (Pennystick Pretzel Bakers), Boyer Factory (Mallo cups and Smoothies), A small old-fashioned amusement park (Lakemont Park), another quaint amusement park (Del Grosso's Amusement Park) within a 15 minute drive(they ...

  • It's where I live...
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/05/05
If you read the rest of the reviews, they are basically correct. But the town's economy isn't terrible... sure the town have a "downtown", a slum area, but so does your hometown. If you are into railroads and trains, this would be a great place. One of the most important aspects of Altoona, PA is the variety of food... Olive ...

  • No Thanks!
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/17/05
Serious lack of cultural and artistic outlets even for a small town. A great deal of the city seemed to be economically depressed and detiorating.

  • A friendly City, especially if you are a train geek like me!
    By Richie T, 06/12/05
Altoona. Not a common destination for most travelers, but if you happen to be "en route" or you have a "thing" for trains, small cities and friendly people, you will like Altoona!

First of all, make no mistake about it, this is not New York City or Chicago or the likes, but rather, it is a small city which was known for the ...
