The Winona area is one of the most beautiful areas in this part of the country. The drive along the Mississippi is breathtaking, especially in the fall. The only drawback is lack of hotels, I was there during La Crosse's Octoberfest and had to drive back to Iowa to find a room, but the fact that it is not at all touristy is a big part of it's charm.
