I loved the lake in September. It wasn't really cold but it wasn't terribly hot and the walks along the lake were terrific. I got some fantastic photos of the sun coming up one morning. Okoboji has lots to offer for water activities. As many water spots, cost of rental is expensive. Lodging during "in-season" gives little bang for your buck, but if you're on the water and away from your room you're fine.
For Iowa, it's somewhere to go, but unfortunately it feels somewhat out of date. Many store fronts are older and the area has a run down feel to it.
