While visiting Kona, we wandered down on Alii Drive and found a fun and friendly place across from the seawall called Splashers. Highly recommend this restaurant, the food, and prices were better to any other on the island and the service was superb.
Great place. However unlike unlike the rest of Hawaii you can expect less beach and more lava fields. However you just have to know where to look and you will have a great time. You should check out the black sand beach, and some local restaurants. Also if possible take a drive around the island.
I loved everything about this trip. Hawaii fulfilled all my dreams; I was in no way disappointed in the sense of community amongst the locals. The warmth, spirituality, and beauty of the island is remarkable! I'll go again and again and again.

I'll go again and again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/01/07
Having visited some of the other islands, I found that the people of the Big Island (especaially Kailua Kona) are the "real ALOHA" spirit. I have never enjoyed a vacation more. My family and I are going again and again.
I was in Capt. Cook during a September and the weather was excellent, not too touristy; stayed at a B&B that doubled as a coffee plantation--highly recommended to tour the plantations. Some of the best diving/snorkeling I experienced in the Islands (I'm not inclined to say where to keep crowds low). :-) ...Hapuna Beach is great and not too far of a drive. A nice change overall from Hilo which was expectedly rainy.

can't wait to get back to the mainland
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/04/06
have lived here for nine months. People are very friendly, but cannot stand working here. The lifestyle here is about twenty years behind anywhere on the mainland. My wife and I teach here and I would never suggest moving here with kids and educating them in the Hawaii schools. Great kids but they don't come to school to be educated it is ...
Kona is a perfect getaway. It allows a person to experience all the joys of Hawaii (beaches, weather, etc)... without the fast pace of Oahu (Honolulu, Waikiki). The beaches are barely crowded (if you hunt hard enough- you can find a secluded beach). The Waikoloa Hilton hotel is VERY nice. For a nominal fee, you can swim with dolphins. Dinner ...
I came to knoa Hawaii in the year 2003 . I went for my graduation trip from high school. I love the scenery and the fresh warm water and fruit..Very relaxing and enjoyable.

Going back in a couple of months
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/23/06
I have a friend living in Kailua-Kona so the last time I went (november 2005) I got to stay for a month and see most of what was on the island. It was a really fun place with plenty to do even for the entire month I was there (although I did visit honolulu for a few days). The only thing I didn't like about it was the humidity.
