Who could have known that the fountains of fire that first lit up the night sky on January 3, 1983 would continue to burn with such intensity seventeen years later? The eruption of Kilauea Volcano in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park continues today as the longest-lived rift activity in Hawai'ian volcano history. For island dwellers, a ...

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/17/06
The large Kilauea Caldera is next to the visitor center. There’s no lava at THIS crater, but it is of an impressive size, including 400-feet tall cliffs to the floor of the caldera and steaming vents on the floor. My girls enjoyed walking through the Thurston Lava Tube, a cave/tunnel left by a lava flow thousands of years ago.
The highlight of ...

Seeing lava up close - Incredible
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/29/06
Sept. 06 - This is a great experience. We left the visitor lot on Chain of Craters Road at 430p and 2 hours later were within a 100 feet of a gorgeous lava field. The view is much better at night, but you need to be prepared to hike back in utter darkness. A flashlight (one per person), sturdy shoes, stamina, jeans (lava is sharp), and willpower ...

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/15/06
Okay, it is the Volcano(s) that are the reason for going. In your lifetime, it is a must see. We were there on 9 April 2006 - the weather was perfect - hit a day with clar sky and light ( remember the trade winds at 3500 feet above sea level are fierce already) winds. Sunshine and temperature was at about 68 degrees all day. This will take all ...

Hike up and see the flowing lava!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/23/06
I've been to volcano national park twice. When I first went there, I just walked till the end of the trail and saw the lava flowing into the sea like most of the ppl. It was cool though I didn't think I got enough of the volcano at that time. The flowing lava I was able to see was just so far away. I visited big island again this winter, ...

When else will you stand on an active volcano?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/25/05
If you go to the Big Island make Volcanoes National Park a "must see" on your list of things to do. It is about two and a half hours from Kailua-Kona, or 45 minutes from Hilo. There is so much to see that you need at least a full day (if not two) to see it all. Be sure to take the short trail out to Halema`uma`u crater and save some ...
