Was apparently the "roughest" town in Alabama (some say the nation) a few decades ago.

However, it is now very charming and pleasant. I went for my niece's graduation, and I thought it was great! Beautiful neighborhoods in the northern part of town (some are in Lee County - where the private school is actually located, others in Russell, where most of the city is located).
