We were forced to stay here when our camping plans fell through. We were charged $160 for a cabin, but it was last minute so we took it. The screen door was almost off the hinges when we arrived. The latch on the main door was broken, but could have been fixed in 5 min with a screwdriver. The room itself was dirty. We have stayed in rustic ...

Swede disappointed in upkeep of Tomteboda
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/11/09
We have loved the quaint, old Swedish immigrant built log cabins, not visible from the highway and near a forest path into town. We have stayed there, on and off, over the past ten years or so.
We are done. A recent stay was weird. I'll limit my comments to the cabin's disrepair: bathroom sink wouldn't drain, skanky odor in vicinity ...

Don't be fooled by the owner
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/11/09
I could not find another place to stay, read the bad reviews and called the owner to give him a chance. He swore they were all just misunderstandings. All problems had been resolved. I added the appliances had to work and the room had to be clean. The refridgerator is illegal(has an old fashion locking door) and would be a hazard to children. The ...

the ghetto of motels

A group of us has been staying here for about 10 years for fishing. It wasn't too bad at first, but has steadily declined. This place is in abominable condition now and premises is stren with garbage and condition of rooms is deplorable. We were last there on May 17, 2009 and our unit had no heat or hot water the entire 4 days we were there. ...
Stayed in fall of 2008 and was charged for the room again in January. Was told it was a new system and 6 people were charged again. I would get a check along with a gift certificate for my trouble. Numerous phone calls and further promises for repayment have led nowhere. Won't return my calls and this is 2 months later. I've been polite and ...

Scammer
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/22/08
I recently stayed here and my account was charged again one month later. The owner will not return my money and now i have to file some stupid claim against him through my bank! What a hassle! I recommend choosing another place in town to stay. The hotel was also dirty and we did not have hotwater for the first night. Please do yourself a huge favor and avoid this hotel.
We stayed 2 nights(Labor Day Weekend) as there were no other places vacant. I can see why this place had some openings. The room was dirty. There were food items on the floor around the table, dirty cups on the counter, no coffee for the coffee pot, burned out lightbulbs etc... When we tried to checkout the office was closed (8:45am). We didn't ...

Avoid unless you like dumps/ owner doesn't care

There was no where else to stay in Grand Marais this night, so we stayed here. What a mistake!!! It was a cabin type room for $94, the room had no air conditioning and stayed over 90 degrees all night even with the doors and windows open because the heat was stuck on, the sink had no plumbing, the screens were torn so bugs flew in all night, and ...

Nice and Cheap
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/04/08
I've stayed at tomoteboda x3. Twice in the motel and once in the cabin. It's a decent place. Walking distance to down town grand marais and a nice view of the trees (mountain) to the left during the fall. I agree with the other reviewer. Why spend so much $ on a place to stay, when you are spending most of the time outdoors. The guy ...
I have stayed at Tomteboda twice. The first was in a cabin in the back of the property. It was less than $30 for the night. There was an issue, so I got a deal. It was old, in need of updating, but I was comfortable, it was quiet and I slept like a rock. The second time was in the newer duplex things. A little more expensive, a weird ...
