There was, a few years back, the Aro Sport hotel right behind the Aro Hotel in Brasov--it was VASTLY cheaper. It was in no way elaborate but it was clean, comfortable by the standards of ancient pre-revolutionary Romanian hotels, efficient enough, and did I mention that it was vastly cheaper.
I wonder if it is still there.

The Aro Palace has gotten poor reviews but we spent two days there this week and it is a considerably improved facility. It has been extensively remodeled. The rooms are newly furnished, exceptionally clean and quiet, the air conditioning works nicely, and the breakfast buffet is quite good. The entrance and lobby are being replaced with new construction that was not yet finished but will be a major improvement. Try it; you'll like it.
