This was the perfect hotel for a family vacation on a budget. Our 4-person family had a clean, somewhat cramped room with a gorgeous South-facing view of Grant Park. The beds were comfortable, but short. The bathroom was OK, with a claustrophobic shower stall instead of a bath. The lobby was comfortable and classy, and the pool/sauna/health club ...

Close to Museum Campus. Clean room. Had suite with three beds, was great for the kids. Free Shuttle service to Michigan Ave. Staff was very friendly and helped with directions around Chicago. Pool was great.

I was lied to about parking, everything!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/08/06
When I made reservations for the Essex Inn online, I made sure to call ahead and check to see if the amenities were the same. I was told I would have parking included with my room price, as well as access to an indoor pool. The representative I spoke to assured me the Essex Inn had all these things, and in operating order. When I came to the hotel, ...

Great Value, Great Location!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/08/06
My wife and I have stayed at the Essex several times, most recently in January 2006 when I had business in Chicago. We love the Essex! The location is terrific for museums, conventions at McCormick Place, sports events, etc. It is also close to the downtown theatre district and Millenium Park. They have a free shuttle bus that takes you pretty much ...
Service was wonderful - everyone went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Rooms were small but comfortable and clean. Great location. The worst thing was that the parking ramp is under construction, but the staff tried making it not be an inconvienence.

Good choice for the price

I have a few items I may agree with on previous reviews, but we use the essex Hotel 1-2 times a year. Yes, it's outdated in the rooms but has always been clean for us. the pool is "cool", but good for exercise. The new gym is great and the view is towards the lake. we found the shuttle service takes us where we want, and yes we WALK ...

A cup half full!

My wife and I took our two boys (3 & 1) for a weekend trip to see the museums in Chicago. Looking to keep costs low we stayed at the Essex. Was it dated? Yes. But the location is great for the museums. Only 1 street to cross, then a nice walk through the park With a subway stop only 8 blocks away and a bus stop across the street the public ...
I was skeptical about staying here after I read some of the reviews, so my view of the place was somewhat jaded. I was in Chicago with my brother to see the Vikings lose to the Bears (which they did quite nicely, thank you), and really didn't think much about where we were staying. It was close to the trains, they offered a shuttle service to ...

Not Exactly as the Website Portrays
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/28/05
I had a convention at the Hilton across the street. I registered late and ended up at the Essex. The website protrays a modernized older facility that appears to be well maintained and exquisite.
Upon checking in I was not informed of any hotel services, but was quickly asked to sign an understanding that checking out early would result in a ...
