If you have a sense of smell don't even think about staying here! Initial rooms stank of mold and dirt - ancient bathroom fittings, corroded metal and depressing. Move to upgraded rooms changed little. Staff, including GM, arrogant, dismissive and unhelpful. High spot was being joined for dinner at Don the Beachcomber by biggest cockroach ...

Awesome hotel

I was nervous since I had read some bad reviews, but it was a great experience. The location was unbelievable. So close to town and a great view from the room, dining area and pool. The pool was smaller than normal, but my kids had the best time playing in it. The staff was very friendly, the luau the BEST and the food in the dining area was above average. We are going back next summer and staying at the Royal Kona again!

My daughter and I spent the week of Christmas in Kona and loved the Royal Kona. I was skeptical because of the things I read, but it was wonderful. A great price and we had a great view. The hotel is wonderfully located. I hope to come back!

Good experience!

We had the choice of an upgrade in a different building but to save money, we opted to stay in the older building that was undergoing renovation and debris was almost everywhere. The rooms were clean and the room we stayed had a partial ocean view. The close proximity to the shops and restaurants was a great plus. Overall, it was a good experience.

Beware.

Elegant hotel; very nice amenities, however rather poor marketing with no advertised restaurant menu (the exotic drinks are really good)and $10 parking fee w/o validation. You have to do extra homework because the Royal Kona Resorts are not forthcoming with this esential info. Paul Ricard Wash., DC

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/05/07
Spent 2 nights last week of March, 2007. The location, staff, cleanliness, food and view were wonderful. We had a renovated room in the tower with superior view of the ocean. Not the Waikaloa Hilton (we had just left) but truly laid back and friendly. Don the Beachcomber restaurant had the best meal we ate on the island. Try the dinner for 2. Linda at the front desk was very helpful and gave great advice. Would definitely go back.

Wish we had gone somewhere else

We stayed late Feb. 2007, our first room was hot and stuffy, the air conditioner did not work and teenagers were climbing from balcony to balcony on the 6th floor. The front desk, maintenance and security did respond promptly. They moved us to a second room, the air conditioner did work, but the room was very shabby, the wallpaper was peeling, ...

We were treated royally by all staff members and loved the view from the sixth floor. The breakfast buffet was very good and the outdoor tables perched on the ocean were delightful. I would recommend the recently renovated Ali'i tower. The champagne provided by the general manager was a pleasant surprise. Hated to leave and can't wait to return.
