I travel to the UCSF Medical Center every few months, and I always stay at the Carl. It's a funky old hotel, with great ambience. Though the rooms are small, they are clean and comfortable. Since I'm not the type of person who thinks that my hotel IS my destination, I'm happy with it. Call me wierd, but I view a hotel as a place to ...
Carl Hotel was good value, but not for the light sleeper. Location near the Carl Valley was excellent - coffee shops, restaurants, stores and also close to the Haight-Ashbury. Rooms were small but clean. Service was excellent. If only the trolley didn't rattle the windows so often...
I needed a place close to UCSF, dining, groceries and needed it to be cheap. And clean which it was. I stayed 1 night on the second floor, and 3 nights on the ground floor (just me). The 2nd floor room was nicer with a private bath, and larger (still small), but $24 more. The ground floor rooom was tiny with a shared bath and a twin bed. But hey, ...
nice staff, very helful. room was very clean. overall i was a happy camper staying there. need to have the local phone service. funky room. the train driving by about every 30 minutes.
This hotel sits on the lite rail system for San Francisco. If you don't mind having the "Polar Express" come through your room every 15 minutes (minus the pleasantries and hot chocolate!), this is the place for you. I was told it was not as noisy upstairs and was given room 217. Every fifteen minutes throughout the evening, with a ...
Carl Hotel had the smallest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in- not for the claustrophobic. They were clean, though, and ours had both a small refrigerator and a microwave.
The other problem was parking, although we were lucky to find a spot right next to the hotel, but then we were afraid to move the car for fear of losing our spot.
Good place for a one night stay when having business at UCSF.
I love the neighborhood! Lots of people from outside San Francisco haven't even heard of Cole Valley, but it has great little restaurants and bars and is a well-kept secret. The hotel is a great value.
When I first arived I simply fell in love with this old hotel, which survived the '89 earthquake. I'm sure glad it did. Of course it has had serious remodeling since then. The rooms are spottless. The staff is always more than willing to help you. And the manager is the nicest person I have ever met. He helped me and my family of four ...
We checked in late but room still available. However room rate was USD115 instead of what is quoted on the web -- because walk-in? Basic facilities OK. It's like a 2 to 3 star hotel in Paris. An old hotel, furnitures old but beds still comfortable. Bath-shower only with toilet. It was small with sliding door. Very close to UCSF. ...
