The hotel was beautiful and other than the fact that they had just sprayed for bugs prior to our arrival and the odor was strong, I have no complaints about the hotel itself. What I did not like was the horses that surround the hotel that are malnourished, had open sores under their harnesses and are forced to cart around overweight tourists on uneven, pothole brick streets from morning till midnight. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Brilliant Small Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/22/06
Cartagena is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but when you couple a city visit with the right hotel you get paradise. The Hotel Casa El Carretero was a collection of style, service and best of all comfort. I loved sucking in the afternoon sun as I watched the birds fly by on the rooftop pool.

Excellence At Its Best

Very nice hotel, beautiful rooms and excellent service. I loved the Old City with bright colors, decorated balconies and lovely colonial charm. There are many delightful corners, plazas and small squares where you can relax and have a drink. All within walking distance to the hotel. I had some of the best food ever in every restaurant we visited. ...

Boutique Hotels are Better
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/27/06
If you go to Cartagena, I would recommend you stay in a Boutique Hotel. The big chain hotels like Santa Clara and Santa Teresa have lost their charm. They are expensive and services are not that great. The boutique hotels have all the amenities that the luxury hotels have, plus more. Many include breakfast and free internet access.
There are a few excellent ones in the Neighborhood of El Getsemani.
