The Hotel is said to be the oldest in Santa Monica, and I'd believe it! The hotel staff is helpful and friendly; however the rooms are dirty and noisy. Needs to be renovated. At very least cleaned better, especially the bathroom. We were scared to take our shoes off, and were a little afraid that roaches would be running around when the lights turned out. Don't waste your money!

Hotel Carmel is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at!!
We are just back home in the UK after a 2 week holiday around California and Nevada. We did 9 hotels in 12 nights!! Stayed at the hotel Carmel for 1 night (no others available) and this was the worst of the lot by FAR!!! In fact I would go as far as to say this is probably the worst I have ...

best place to stay in Santa Monica
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/28/08
Loved this funky old hotel. Great value for money. Centraly located with friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are adequate and the beds ultra comfortable. We are planning to stay again next time we are in California
This is an older hotel that reminds me of a Genuine Haunted hotel in downtown Phoenix, the San Carlos. It is older and has seen better days. (I have stayed in much worse places, but I wouldn't recommend them.)
The rooms are renovated, however and filled with enormous Mission Style furniture sized for a big suite. Actually that's kind of ...
I've stayed at many hotels in California and this by far was the worst. It was like stepping into a horror movie when we arrived. From the to small dingy elevator to the florecent blinking lights it was a nightmare. The rooms are in very poor conditions from the linens to the carpet. Our hotel room window was broken and had bars on it. The ...

Older Hotel, great location

We decided to stay here, as there was a coupon in a book for it. We checked around, and Hotel Carmel was half the price as the surrounding "brand name hotels".
The elevator was slow - we thought it died on us a couple of times - The Valet was very friendly, and one of the 3 front desk agents we spoke to was a miserable grouch, while ...

This hotel is good for location if you are there for shopping, eating out, or beach going. The service was good, and the valet guys friendly.
But, if you want to spend a little time in your room to relax...this is not the place for you. The rooms were extremely noisy day and night. Our room had been freshly painted and the fumes gave us ...
I was skeptical about this hotel considering the negative reviews, however I thought this place was great! I live in Long Beach and spent the weekend in Santa Monica with friends. Mind you, this is not Shutters by any means. This is an old hotel, with an old staircase, old elevators, old hallways and old (but newly renovated) rooms. The beds ...

This hotel was great for what I needed. It was just in the perfect location for all kinds of hot spots in Santa Monica. It was just a block a way from the beach, pier and 3rd street promenade. Its a get place to stay when in Santa Monica.

If you're looking for a cheap place to stay and still be in a good location, this is your spot. No amenities or bells and whistles here. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.
