Like the Korean War Memorial the profoundness of this site is best felt at night.
The lighting of the memorial and the reduced number of people help you feel the solmenness of the site.
Set between the Washington Monument and the Capitol it is even a romantic place to dwell in just after sunset.
The site recognizes the major battles and the states that participated and is just awe inspiring with it's size.

Pompous architecture
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/13/06
I was very disappointed by the WWII memorial. There are two things wrong with it: the architecture, and the location.
The design of the memorial looks more appropriate for one of Hitler or Mussolini's attempts at self-glorification. It's overblown and pompous. No subtlety at all. It really does look like an example of Fascist ...
It was a great memorial. But it sort of had the same things over and over again, but that's ok! The best time to visit is the summertime at 5-6 PM. I think that everyone would enjoy it! I loved it!
We did not expect the World War II Memorial to be a highlight of our trip to DC, but it was. The pictures of it do not do it justice. We definitely plan to go back. It's even a nice place to just relax and hang out for a bit during a long day of walking around DC.

Newest Memorial

The most triumphant memorial on the Mall! If standing at the base of the gold stars gazing up to the Lincoln Memorial does not grip your heart, surely the large water cannons and Baldacchino sculptures will. Dramatically lit and safe, I recommend viewing the Memorial at night.

such a bland, uninspiring and faceless memorial is a sad tribute to the largest war ever fought.

long walk to view
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/29/05
The memorial is beautiful, however, you have to walk about 1 1/2 miles from the lincoln memorial to see this. After doing this walk, we were to tired to go see the vietnam memorial.

Living History

A beautiful--and long-overdue--memorial. I highly recommend that visitors seek out war veterans (recognizable by their VFW hats) who often visit the memorial. Most are friendly and willing to tell vivid stories about their experiences during WWII.
Note: If you can walk from Metro, bike, or take a taxi you'll save a lot of time looking for parking, especially on the weekends.
