We truly enjoyed visiting Great Smokey Nat'l Park and hiking various trails (do pick up a day hike book at the visitor ctr for $1). The park is such awe inspiringly beautiful. The tourist strip of Gatlinburg, however is a dive. It reminded us of a cheap carnival with funnel cake and airbrushed junk everywhere. It just kills the beauty of the location. Do stay in a hotel there, but head straight to the park as soon as you can.
I love the Great Smoky Mtns! Between the breathtaking views and the countless walking trails, you would never run out of adventures to partake. My family tries to at least travel there once a year, and as soon as we leave we are all begging to go back! A trip to the Great Smoky Mountains is well worth the time and the money. LOVE THE SMOKIES
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/10/09
HAVE TRIED TO GO TO THE SMOKIES EVERY YR SINCE I WAS A CHILD,I AM NOW 45,MY PARENTS TOOK MY SISTER,BROTHER AND I QUITE OFTEN.. IT WAS MY MOM'S,WHO IS IN HEAVEN NOW,MOST FAVORITE VACATION SPOT ,SOMETIMES I THINK I CAN HEAR HER VOICE ON THE WIND UP THERE
The drive is a bit bumpy, but it's well worth the trip. Not crowded, interesting homesteads to hike/drive to. If you're not particularly fond of crowds, it's worth checking out.
We chose to hike the Chimney Top Trail. It's 4 miles long and is pretty tough. The first mile isn't too bad, but that second mile is a killer. Make sure you pack lots of water and snacks. The view at the top is worth the climb!
A beautiful drive, lovely waterfalls, and nice hiking grounds. Only wish we could have stayed longer... also pretty touristy as a national park. For hiking, you're better off somewhere more remote. But for gorgeous views -- especially if you have somewhat limited mobility and need driveable paths -- this is a great park.
This place is a step back in time. It is an awesome experience for young and the old. In addition to visiting the past, the ride/hike through the park is full of wild-life-bears, deer, coyote, etc. My husband and I go one to two times a year!
I'm not much of a hiker, but I really enjoyed the park. There were a lot of easy trails to take and beautiful waterfalls or views at the end. You must go to Clingman's Dome, Grotto Falls, and Laurel Falls.

Views in the actual park hard to come by
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/25/08
In several places the park was scenic, but in order to find a great view, you had to drive a lot because most of the park is surrounded by trees that dramatically reduce the views. The scenic routes are worth it during sunset, but if you get behind a slow moving car on the one way road, you will be waiting for a while.
