There were petrified trees. Quite impressive. And if I hadn't had to pay an unreasonably high entry fee to see the 10 or so trees, I might have been impressed. As it was, very poor value for the amount of cash. Good gift store though!

a little overrated

I had alot of kids with me when we visited, and the kids, (ages 5-12) really didn't get the timeline of the park. They did like the mine (tunnel), but you can't go in it. All in all it was alot of money for walking less that 1/2 a mile through a park where most was fenced off. I would suggest big Tree's in Arnold, Ca. The kids really like it, and it's much longer hiking.

GREAT PLACE TO STOP
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/14/06
We stop here on our travels thru the southwest and were glad we did. Lots of places in the start to pull over and look at the wonderful views of arizona. Then you get to the pull overs where the petrified forest is. Nice place for more vacation memories.
How cool to see 200 million year old trees truned to stone by time and the elements? The Painted desert and this area is like being in a sci fi movie, or on another planet. Wish we had more time-SO cool! Loved it!
Petrified Forest/Painted Desert are interesting to see but not really worth the effort and money to get there unless you're on your way somewhere else, say to the Grand Canyon. There is some nice scenery and the petrified wood is pretty when you see it up close, but from a distance it just looks like a pile of cut-up logs in a big sandbox. ...
