This area around the lake is very run down, very polluted water, nasty packs of dogs. NOt what I expected. This lake looked like it was once a beautiful lake, but now it is very very run down . I saw fish being cooked from the lake, and they were disgusting because of the polluted water.ALso a Very sketchy atmosphere. I would not recommend this place for tourists.

Lake Atitlan and Lake Amatitlan are two different lakes
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/02/08
Lake Amatitlán is not the same as Lake Atitlán. They are very different but are both beautiful, though. Have not been in either one for about 20 years but will go there this year for sure.

I enjoyed the atmosphere around the lake. There were alot of nice spots to eat and it had an overall vacation feel to it. Horseback riding, cable cars to take you way up for a nice view, and lots of little gift stands to buy cool stuff.

I love this place when you are going in to the city which is called Panachel. There is a water fall where touruist love to hangout. Its like Miami but with a vlocanoe in the middle of it all.
I tell you i need to get away form all the crazy things in the city. I'm a guatemalan native and the place for me is this. i go for a weekend and come back a new person.
Lake Atitlán is amazing. The view is simply unparalleled, and this comes from one who is familiar with pristine Caribbean shores and crisp Andean snows. The people are kind and welcoming, and one can find every comfort necessary.
Lake Amatitlán, which is much closer to Guatemala City, on the other hand, has been fairly ruined by pollution. ...
Ther is no more beautiful place in the world than Lake Atitlan. This volcanic region was recently devastated by Hurricane Stan and mudslides, but the spirit of the churches is rebuilding the community.
When in Lake Atitlan, stay at La Posada de Atitlan in Santiago. It is the most beautiful resort. No stay is complete without their famous macadamia nut brownies, and chicken tacos.
