Enjoyed all of Heidelberg attractions but passed up a necklace--in a shop window--near the Hotel Ritter on Hauptstrasse. Think it was made of glass. I asked the price (90+euros) but foolishly did not buy. Can anyone recall name & address of shop with the show window full of beautiful necklaces? Thanks for your help.
Good food everywhere. We ate dinner at Ellen's out in the square and it is a great way to sit back and watch people. We had breakfast at Hard Rock which was good and a ton of food. We ate lunch at the Beer Krug (sp) but right across from Hard Rock. They have a great bratwurst and fries lunch. Shops were touristy and had lots of stuff to remind you of your trip.
i first went here in 2000 and thought it was great...i returned four years later and still found plenty to do
at first it seems like a tourist trap...but it is very unique and has something for everyone, from shops to restaurants
the churches and castle give it all a lot of character and the walk along the river promises to be among the best ...

This is a great area filled with shops, arts & crafts, and restaurants/bars galore. You could spend hours here which I found great buys in souvenirs and had a great time in the bars and restaurants.
Its something you have to do if you are in Heidelberg! So many shops and so many different things to buy. The prices vary because they are not just tourist traps. From Antiques to clothing stores like Dillards. (with some dollar stores in-between) As you wander through these cobble stone streets you feel welcomed everywhere you turn.People of ...
I love to walk down this street. It has so much character. Even though the stores aren't open on Sundays, this street gives real meaning to "Window Shopping". I love to walk down with friends and watch people as they are walking. It sort of reminds me of 16th Street Mall in Denver!

Overhyped, not what it used to be

Heidelberg has become too much of a tourist trap especially the main street (Haupstr.). My mother and grandparents lived here and I visited starting in 1966 and it has been steadily going downhill. Many of the stores have gone out of business replaced by tourist trap shops selling overpriced junk. Lots of litter in the street, very depressing. Come for a day trip, visit the castle, then stay elsewhere.
