Granted, Donald Ross was even less hands-on in his design business than Jack Nicklaus is in his, but this one bears some hallmarks of Ross' best work, including the green complex mounding and bunkering, and the overall flow and elegant look of the course.
When I played, the greens were top-end private club quality, but perhaps most importantly, Brainerd is just a flat-out fun place to play golf.
