We drove through the first time and rode our bikes the next day just a short ride from Casa Ybel Resort where we stayed(and we will stay here again if we can get in.) This is a true nature experience that our children and us loved.

We had loads of fun. We saw an Alligator while we were there. They have an amazing look out tower that you can walk up and see everything. The refuge even allows fishing. Plenty of wildlife. Overall this is a must for any vistor to the Island.

I loved seeing the preserve at sunset. I spent 3 days on Sanibel and went to the preserve every day at a different time, and the experience was never the same. I loved that you could decide how much "nature" you wanted to deal with by having the option of just staying in the car or getting out and really seeing the sights. I would go back anytime.
On a recent visit to the island, we stopped by the refuge. Throughout the entire drive we saw absolutely nothing. Well, except for fishermen. I so looked forward to seeing the wildlife....

Walk, don't drive, or you'll miss the wildlife in the trees on the side of the road. The visitors center can provide a list of animals found here, which is interesting.
