Great Instructor! I never get the sense that Master Nearing holds anyone back. He does place a very high value on learning the technical aspects of the art before advancing into more demanding aspects of Wing Chun . I like being confident that I can execute Wing Chun when confronted. I joined his classes to raise my level of attacking and defending. If you want lower competency then I would say go to a lesser capable instructor.
When reading reviews I find some saying Mr.Nearing will slow you down and wont let you reach a higher playing field or things around the line of that. The fact is Mr.Nearing only will let you progress when you've let yourself progress, he's not just going to say, "yeah you are not ready for this but sure I'll over whelm you with ...
I write my review in hopes that anyone who is researching Wing Chun and is seeking out a teacher, will have an easier time making up his/her mind after reading this.
It is with tremendous pride that I write this review as a current student of Phil Nearing. Seeking out martial arts teachers is by far one of the most difficult things to do ...

Anyone who critizies Phil Nearing's instruction is not grounded in martial arts. That type of person is part of America's attitude of let me buy this skill and give it to me NOW. After a few years in Phil's gym I can tell you the Wing Chun is taught very well. The lesson is something that stays with me and I understand it more and ...

Solid Wing Chun
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/17/07
I studied intensely with Phil for 5 years. Phil is a pro. He takes the art seriously and his a very high-level practitioner. If you dedicate yourself, you can become a truely excellent hand-to-hand fighter under Phil's tutelage.
Other reviewers have noted that Phil is reluctant to take any students through the entire program of Wing ...
Oh snap! Phil' school advertisin on the web! I been out the game for a few years but I went to Phil's school for a few months a few years back and it's still the only Wing Chun or martial arts school period in Chicago I'd go to since Steve Lee Swift left. It's good to see it's still a good Wing Chun school in the Chi.
Full disclosure: I studied at this school for five solid years before I moved away from Chicago, and every time I'm back in town, I still return to train and visit.
Phil is a patient and skilled instructor and an excellent proponent of the art -- certainly among the top three in the United States. He is one of the few who seriously teaches ...

only authentic game in town
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/03/06
I trained at other schools and can honestly say this is the most authentic wing chun school I've ever been to. I also did my research before joining: this is the only school in town with direct lineage to Ip Jing and Ip Chun. It's affordable--less than half of what other martial arts gyms will charge you, plus student discounts, and for ...

Rationed, Slow Teaching
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/09/06
Phil Nearing teaches in a slow and rationed manner. It will take you YEARS to acquire any real proficiency in the art if you study at his speed.
This is a shame, because Phil learned from Sifu Steve Lee Swift, who held NOTHING back. If you got into a situation in which the best possible solution would be a technique from the Bil Gee form, Swift ...
This is the best place to learn. Phil and his staff are very good instructors and pay close attention to detail. The location is great. Why go anywhere else?
