We visit this cemetery everytime we come to Savannah. I am usually not into this type of thing but there is something about Bonaventure that I feel I could walk forever (boo). It is so pretty and peaceful. Just take the time to visit and read some of the old markers. The statues alone are worth visiting. Very pretty!
My friends and I made a trip to Savannah in May, 2008 mainly for the "Garden of..." tour and stayed 5 days in a townhouse a block from the Mercer house. It was great! We were trying to figure out how we could quit our jobs back in Missouri and stay. But in the end, we had to go home. We stayed almost half of one of our days in Bonaventure ...
This is a wonderful place to visit to get a taste of "Old Savannah". It has great scenery and wonderful views. I definetely recommend going there, just be aware that they do infact still have funerals going on inside the cemetary on occasion. Make sure to bring your camera!
My husband and I honeymooned in Savannah in Oct. 2007, we had a little difficulty finding the cemetary but was well worth the search. Hauntingly beautiful, cant wait to go back and see it again.
The Bonaventure Cemetery is the best history bargain in Savannah. History buffs and genealogists will thrill at the sight of the old sculptures, headstones and architechture. The large looming trees and Spanish moss lend to its mystery. Don't leave Savannah without a few hours strolling through this treasure trove of history.
Do your research. Lots of interesting folks reside at Bonaventure. Lots of interesting grave markers. Tours can be scheduled online. Cemetery office very helpful. They will give you a map to navigate. Public restrooms available. Be sure to take a camera. Cemetery is on a bluff of the Wilmington River. We got great directions to cemetery online. Cemetery is off main track.
Surprisingly this cemetery is the most beautiful that I've seen. Lots of rich people are laid to rest here with grand tombstones and crypts. There are angel statues galore. There is no admission fee so I guess the value is great too only costs gas to get there.
