I am not a big air/space fan, but we went to the museum for my husband. He was deeply disappointed by the museum, and felt that much of what was displayed was replicas, and that the displays were very haphazard. There are better ways to spend time in DC.

Don't miss the American History Museum exhibit here while that museum is being renovated!
The American History Museum exhibit was the reason we went to the Air and Space Museum. While we enjoyed what we saw of the Air and Space Museum (and how can you not be thrilled by seeing The Spirit of St. Louis, and all of the air and space exhibits), seeing R2D2, C3PO, Dorothy's ruby slippers, Abe's hat, Jerry's "puffy" shirt, Mr. Rogers' sweater, plus so much more was so exciting and fun!

Too crowded
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/31/07
We went on May 30th 2007 and found it was way to crowded with all the schools groups in the building. Around 4PM they started leaving and then it became bearable. Now mind you that I went with my two children, ages 3 and 6; so I'm not against children. It's just that you cannot spend any time at any of the exhibits when so many pushing and screaming students are there.
Be sure to bring good walking shoes and try to visit in the off season if you can. Be sure to plan accourdingly so you can visit the Einstein Planeterium and the IMAX theatre.
This provides a happy respite for your feet and back during the visit if space correctly.
The museum is simply not to be missed with the Apollo and Mercury artifacts as well as the history of flight.
As a former local I would often visit this when I was in town. It's easy to get to and there is a lot going on. It will be the bulk of your day and isn't hard to get to. Not to mention it's free.
The day we were here it was very crowded and there was a lot of remodeling/construction going on. I have bruises on my shoulders from my grandson's flying ability in the Flight Simulator. You really do go up-side-down. It was fun but not our favorite spot in DC.

World class!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/24/06
Like most other free museums in Washington D.C., this museum is world class! The exhibits are fairly comprehensive, presenting detailed history of aviation and space travels. Definitely a must-see place for aviation buffs. Having only managed to spend about an hour in this museum because of time constraint, this is definitely one place I would love to visit again.
